Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind

University of Northern Colorado. Theoretical Director Anne M Toewe, Ph.D., MFA. Watercolor. 11” x 14” watercolor paper. 2020.

Spring Awakening sets place in Germany in the 1890s. This heavy play is written to share the repressive society that keeps these children in ignorance about sexuality, puberty, and sex. Three children Wendla, Mechior, and Mortiz face the harsh world as they go through traumatic experiences in their life. This theoretical design was inspired by a theoretical director, Anne M Toewe. Dr. Toewe shared her Director’s concept and from there I came up with this design. For the show, she saw the adults being in gray scale and the children of the play having color to them since they are our protagonists and this is their world.
