The 39 Steps is about a boring man, Richard Hannay, who meets a spy, Annabella Schmidt, who takes him an epic adventure. A cast of four actors play over 20 characters in this fast-paced comedic story in 1935, London. This theoretical design was inspired by Anne M Toewe, the theoretical director. I worked closely with her and my other designer colleagues to create this Vaudeville inspired show while staying true to the time period with the history of clothes. The color palettes and patterns for each character plays into the comedy of the show and bringing the “Louder, Faster, Funnier” idea that Dr. Toewe was going for with multiple quick changes performed by our two clowns.
