Eclipsed explores the wold of three penitent women at a convent laundry in St. Paul’s in Ireland, 1963. These women face the harshness of the world that forces unwed and pregnant mothers to work as penitent women in church-run laundries. These women were over seen by nuns, treated poorly, and were forced to put up their babies for adoption. Rosa, was a daughter to one of the penitent women and was adopted by an American family. For this play, I researched the period and location of this play to help get a better understanding of where these women were from.
